Château de Chillon

Chillon Castle sits on a small rock island in Lake Geneva, just a few metres off the shore. For centuries it guarded the narrow road between the water and the mountains. Seen from the land it is a fortress; seen from the lake it is a palace.

A little history

The Counts of Savoy turned the fortress into a lakeside residence in the 13th century. In 1536 the Bernese took it and freed the prisoner François Bonivard.

Lord Byron visited in 1816 and made Bonivard famous with his poem The Prisoner of Chillon. Today the castle is one of the most visited historic monuments in Switzerland.

The booklet opens with the full story: key dates, what to look for and where to find it.
